Bariatric Dietitian
Why is a Bariatric Dietitian Important?
Understanding nutrition for weight loss surgery can feel daunting. There are many different options for bariatric weight loss surgery including a Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass, Intragastic Balloon or Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band (Lap-Band). Before surgery, you may need to follow a special liver-shrinking diet using Optifast or similar products for 2-6 weeks. Immediately after surgery, you will follow a structured texture progression diet including liquids, purees, soft foods and then normal foods to allow for proper healing and recovery.
After surgery, you will need to take certain nutritional supplements for life, and follow certain guidelines for protein, fibre, fluids and core food groups to make sure you are meeting your nutrient requirements.
