Plant Nutrition and Wellness's team include an expert vegan sports nutritionist and dietitian. She is dual qualified with Dietitans Australia and Sports Dietitians Australia.  

Leah Higl is based at our Brisbane nutrition clinic in Hamilton but also offers online dietitian consultations all around Australia. You can see her no matter whether you're from Sydney, Darwin, Melboune, Tasmania, Perth or Adelaide!

 

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO WORK WITH A DIETITIAN AS A VEGAN ATHLETE: 

A well planned vegan diet can meet all your essential macro and micronutrients needs. However, athletes engaging in a high level of exercise must be equipped with the knowledge of how to eat and cook a well planned vegan diet. This will help to prevent nutritional deficiencies, fuel their nutrition around exercise and optimise recovery. 

Important nutrients to address on a vegan diet include:

  • Protein

  • Zinc

  • Vitamin B12

  • Vitamin D

  • Calcium

  • Leucine 

  • Omega-3s including ALA, EPA and DHA

  • Iodine

WHAT REBATES ARE AVAILABLE

You do not need a referral to see a dietitian, however to access medicare rebates it is essential to have a referral. Please speak to your GP regarding eligibility for a referral. 

  • Private health insurances - item codes 500 (initial, in person), 600 (review in person), 301 (initial, telehealth), 302 (review, telehealth). The rebate will vary based on your insurer.

  • Chronic Disease Management Plan (EPC) - this entitles you for up to 5 sessions per calendar year with a rebate of $54.60

  • Eating Disorder Management Plan - this entitle you for up to 20 session per calendar year with a rebate of $54.60 per session.

  • DVA - If you have a gold card with the Department of Veterans Affairs you can receive up to 12 sessions with a dietitian. These sessions are bulk billed. 

CONSULTATION FEES
Initial appointment (60 minutes): $150
Initial appointment (60 minutes) + Sports Specific Nutrition Plan: $220
Review appointment (30 minutes): $80
Review appointment (30 minutes) + Sports Specific Nutrition Plan: $150
Sports Specific Nutrition Plans are made outside of the consultation time.
SPORTS SPECIFIC NUTRITION PLAN: 
Sports specific nutrition plan may include:
  • Event-day nutrition plans
  • Carbohydrate loading plans
  • Body composition modification plans
  • Weight-cut plans

They include the following:
  1. Your individual calorie requirements based on your body composition goals
  2. Macronutrient targets
  3. Supplement guides and reccomendations
  4. Complete nutrition plan including main meals & snacks
  5. Meal planning template so that you are able to stick to the plan whilst eating a wide variety of foods you love.
  6. Portioned recipes designed to meet your personal requirements.
  7. Lifestyle advice to enhance your recovery including information on sleep, hydration and nutrient timing
  8. Link to Google spread sheet to track your progress and daily habits
  9. A summary of all information discussed during your consult.
