10 Common Foods That Are Accidentally Vegan

June 30, 2017

Now just a little disclaimer before I start this list of common foods that are accidentally vegan, always remember that just because something is labelled as vegan does not always mean that it is HEALTHY. Just as people often think foods labelled as “gluten” free are the healthier alternative, this is not always the case. These foods, although absolutely tasty and delicious – are also highly processed and high in fat, sugar, salt and other additives. Although these foods may not add much nutritional value to our diets, eating a vegan diet in general does help to reduce environmental impact and animal cruelty.

10 Common Foods That Are Accidentally Vegan

1. Oreo

This classic little cookie is a vegan’s number one late night treat. Contrary to popular belief, the “creamy” inside of the classic oreo are in fact dairy and animal product free.

2. Arnott’s Jatz Original

Lucky for vegans, that delicious buttery taste that we all know and love is 100% cruelty free.

3. Skittles

A perfect example of when “eat the rainbow” doesn’t always mean, “eat the rainbow.” We should focus on fruits and vegetables most of the time, but for when we want a bit of colour in a small circular shape, we have skittles. Completely gelatine free too!

4. Arnott’s Original Barbecue Shapes

We were all very thankful when Arnotts brought back their “old school” shape flavours to the market, bringing back with it the known and loved barbeque original flavour – and what’s better, it’s vegan too!

5. Arnott’s Lemon Crisp, Ginger Nut, Raspberry shortcakes and Chocolate Ripple Biscuits

Shout out to Arnott’s for supplying these four delicious, 100% animal product free, sweet biscuit flavours! I know what I’ll be enjoying this Friday night.

6. Masterfood’s Traditional Tartare sauce – Rich & Creamy

I know when I was a kid the only way I could bare to eat fish was when it’s was drowned in this sauce, and now I know why! Contradicting the “creamy” sauce the label suggests, this product contains no cream or animal products at all!

7. Nando’s Garlic Sauce

Now just like the tartare sauce, finding out that Nando’s Garlic sauce was vegan really surprised me! Look at the bottle – “surely not” I originally thought! But I was later thrilled to find out that I could add this new little sauce to my collection, perfect for next time I am having pizza!

8. Woolworths Select Double Choc Biscuits

I was thrilled to discover that Woolworths sell their own personal vegan and gluten free twist on the classic Australian treat of “Tim Tams”. Here is their Double Choc Biscuits – what more could you love!

9. Whittakers Ghana Peppermint, 72% Cocao Dark Ghana and Bittersweet Peanut Slap Chocolate

I obviously HAD to take a photo of the peppermint flavour – as that is definitely my all time favourite. My eyes almost popped out of my head when I found that Whittaker’s also had two other vegan varieties – 72% Cocao and Bittersweet Peanut! Yummm!

10. BBQ, Original and Roast Chicken Pringles

Pringles has got to be my favourite brand at being easy to identify whether it’s vegan or not! Turn the tin to the side and reveal the vegan/vegetarian tick box, and you will be as amazed as I am to find out that the roast chicken flavour (who would’ve thought!), original and BBQ flavours are all vegan!
